Browns end draft taking RB Matthew Dayes BEREA, Ohio–He wasn’t Mr. Irrelevant–but close to it.
Every year, the player picked last in the NFL Draft is dubbed ‘Mr. Irrelevant’.
The Browns had the next-to-last pick in this year’s draft and picked running back Matthew Dayes from North Carolina State. Pro Football Weekly listed Dayes as the 17th best running back in this year’s draft. Dayes was a second team All-ACC selection.
Dayes (5-8 5/8, 207) ran a 4.57 in the 40-yard dash.
“Productive as a runner and a receiver,” Pro Football Weekly said. “Good vision and cutback runner. Has a quick burst when he sees a lane. Runs low to the ground, has good balance and keeps legs driving on contact. Good hand. While he is not a power guy, he gets yardage after contract. Very competitive.”
Dayes rushed for 2,856 yards in his four-year career at NC State with 34 touchdowns. He also caught 98 passes for 937 yards and six touchdowns. In 2016, Dayes had 249 rushes for 1,166 yards (4.7 avg. ) and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 32 passes for 271 yards.
