Rams add depth in 6th round of 2017 NFL Draft The Los Angeles Rams in the sixth round utilized both of their selections to add more depth on both sides of the roster by taking Tulane defensive tackle Tanzel Smart at the 189th spot and Virginia Tech fullback Sam Rogers at the 206th pick.
Smart put together a productive collegiate career over the last three seasons as a starter racking up 9.5 sacks in 36 games played, including recording 18.5 tackles for loss in 2016. He earned first-team All-American Athletic Conference honors in each of the last two years.
The 22-year-old voiced much excitement on Saturday about joining the Rams’ talented defensive line that is headed by a pair of Pro Bowl talents in defensive tackle Aaron Donald and converted outside linebacker Robert Quinn.
“It means the world to me,” Smart said. “A player like Aaron Donald and Quinn, I really want to learn a lot from Aaron Donald. I’m just glad I’m in that situation to play and learn from those guys.”
Smart brings another viable option in the interior of the defensive line that will put him in line to compete with the likes of Dominique Easley and Ethan Westbrooks for playing time behind Donald and Michael Brockers.
“To tell the truth, I’m bringing the same skill set that all of those guys have,” Smart said. “I’m going to hop in. I’m going to play my roll and anywhere that coach wants me to play, I’ll do it.”
Rogers spent four seasons with Virginia Tech being utilized in various roles in the backfield racking up 1,494 yards from scrimmage with 11 touchdowns in 53 games. His addition brings immediate addition toward the long-term future plans surrounding Cory Harkey, who is heading into the second year of his three-year, $5.7 million deal.
However, Rogers believes he brings much versatility to the table for Los Angeles that can help him carve out a unique role.
“I can do a bunch of different things, like I said,” Rogers said. “The Rams are going to bring me in as a fullback, and I can’t wait to block for Todd Gurley and contribute in any way I can.”
