Thomas Bjorn reflects on Sergio Garcia’s memorable victory at the Masters ahead of this week’s Trophee Hassan II.

European Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn feared Sergio Garcia may not have ever won a major title had he suffered another near-miss at the Masters.
Garcia claimed a maiden major success at the 74th attempt, defeating Ryder Cup team mate Justin Rose on the first hole of a sudden death play-off at Augusta.
The Spaniard saw a three-shot lead turn into a two-stroke deficit during a topsy-turvy final round, where Garcia missed a birdie putt for victory at the final hole but made amends when the players returned to the 18th tee.

Garcia moved to world No 7 with victory at Augusta

Garcia ended a run of 22 major top-10s without a victory, and Bjorn was delighted to see the 37-year-old finally achieve major success.
Speaking ahead of this week’s Trophee Hassan II, live on Sky Sports, Bjorn said: “He had most of the golfing world, certainly on this side of the Atlantic, in tears on Sunday.
“It was a fantastic moment for him, and obviously the way they played, the two of them coming down the stretch was magnificent.
“He has wanted and deserved that for so many years. I remember when he came out in the late 90s as this young kid and everyone thought he was going to have double-figure majors the way he played.

Bjorn was part of Sky Sports’ commentary team for the Masters

“To be honest, it was probably a question of if it didn’t happen this Sunday, when he got into position, it was going to be difficult to see him win one (major).
“So I’m totally delighted for him, like everybody is. It was magnificent.”
Bjorn tees off for the opening two rounds in Morocco alongside Nicolas Colsaerts and Marcel Siem, while 2016 champion Jeunghun Wang begins his defence with Jamie Donaldson and Alexander Levy.
“I love to play this golf course so I hope I enjoy this week,” Wang said. “I am so happy to come back to Morocco and this golf course.

Wang won last year’s event in a play-off

“I had a great year last year but this year has not really been good because I played big tournaments in the States, but I am so happy to come here and I’m good to play.”
