Scarlet Conversation: Don Bosco Coach Teel Follow @SamHellmanScout

Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco Prep head coach Mike Teel on hosting spring evaluation…
“It’s been really busy. We’ve had over 70 coaches come in. Obviously, we have some really talented players in the program, especially our ’18 class. We’ve got a really good dynamic of kids. We’ve got the national kids all the way down to the D-III kids with the Ivy Leagues and the CAAs. It’s been a really busy month but that’s what you want when you’re here. You want traffic through your door.”
On settling in as Don Bosco Prep’s head coach…
“At the end of this month, they will (slow down). Up until this point and getting everything ready, it’s been busy. It’s one thing after the next. I’m still kind of getting the staff organized and getting the schedules done and all of that stuff.”
On Ohio State’s Greg Schiano visiting…
“He was here once or twice. It was good to see him. He was back here in January. Obviously he’s recruiting Tyler (Friday) and Marcellus (Earlington) and Kevin (Brennan). It’s always good to see him. Always giving me some ideas, especially being in the head-coaching role now, some pointers and some tips. I’ve always got questions for him. We talk once or twice a month on the phone. When he comes in during the recruiting periods, we spend some time. We went and grabbed dinner a couple of weeks ago when he was in. It’s always good to see him.”
On maintaining relationships with Rutgers people…
“That’s what I learned in college. It’s about relationships. With Coach, it’s always about building relationships and developing relationships.”
On Ray Rice speaking to the team…
“He’s been one of my best friends since college. I asked him to come and speak. I actually got the idea from Ohio State when he went and spoke out there. I had the idea to have him come in and speak about something really. Obviously, it’s a topic in the United States right now that you probably hear way too much about. To have an opportunity for my kids to hear that and how it changed his life in a negative way, I thought that would be important for my kids. At some point, they’re going to leave here and they’re going to be on their own. At one point in their life, if they end up in that situation where the outcome isn’t what it was (in Rice’s situation) because they heard Ray talk, then I did a good thing for those kids.”
On Tyler Friday’s national recruitment…
“He’s unbelievable. He’s a special, special kid. You get a couple of those guys, probably, in a career of coaching. The pressure and everything, he’s been fine. He comes to work every day. I think the best thing that I’ve seen from him is, whether he’s getting recruited by Ohio state and Rutgers and Michigan in the same day, he shows up to our workout. He’s a leader in our workout. He wins every sprint with the line group. He does everything that you would want a kid like that to be.”
On rising 2020 running back Jalen Berger…
“I told Jalen when we started our offseason program, I pointed to Tyler, I pointed to Kevin and I pointed to Marcellus when he got off the basketball court. I said, ‘you see those guys? Those are the guys you want to follow.’ As a freshman coming into the program, he wasn’t really sure what to do or how to do it. You follow those types of guys and you get good results. All three of those guys show up to work every day, do everything we ask of them, do the extra stuff. Those are guys that you win championships with having them in your program.”
